PEGO Nomination Form

Dear PEGO members,

PEGO’s first electronic voting trial ended on Monday, July 9th, 2012. This vote asked members about switching to an e-ballot system or continuing with the existing paper ballot system. Despite some initial difficulties, members’ participation and feedback was excellent and promising.

  • 557 e-ballots were sent to PEGO members
  • 290 votes were cast

The results are as follows:

  • 9 votes in favour of the paper ballot
  • 281 votes in favour of the e-ballot

The result can also be viewed by accessing PEGO’s voting site at pego.simplyvoting.com then clicking on New Voting System Proposal.

I would like to thank all PEGO members for their participation.

Regards,

Communications Committee

Recently, PEGO had the pleasure of meeting with Kurtis Berg, son of Sharon Berg who works at The Ministry of Transportation.  We were able to give him a bursary of $2000 as he entered his first year of school at McMaster University.

Below, Kurtis’ essay on his desire to become an Engineer:

I, Kurtis Berg, want to make a difference. I am entering first year Engineering at McMaster University in September 2011, and after a common first year I intend on joining their Biomedical Program.  Following my undergraduate degree I plan to attend either Medical School or continue towards obtaining a PhD, depending on which course would better suit my career path. My long term goal is to work on the development of either prosthetics or surgical equipment. I have always been passionate about the application of science to improve everyday life, and a career in Engineering has been my direction since Grade 4.  More recently, a couple of things have focused my interest in the Biomedical field.

Last semester in Exercise Science we had a guest speaker come in who had recently lost the use of her legs. She spoke about living with paraplegia, and that presentation gave me a particular interest in spinal cord injuries. I am also very interested in high-tech precision equipment, and this very closely links back to the medical field. As well, I read an article in the newspaper about two undergrads at the University of Toronto who have developed an arm that can be controlled through brain waves. I think that is the most interesting thing imaginable, and it is something that greatly improves the quality of life of many people. Technology like this is exactly what I want to develop, in an effort to give abilities back to those who have lost it, or save lives with new surgical procedures and equipment.

I believe, as exemplified through my results in high school, that I have demonstrated a high degree of commitment to my education, and maintained it as a high priority. The money from the PEGO Bursary really would make a difference. I would not work less, just be able to shift my mindset to work more on school than on a part time job. This bursary would help me get that one step closer to achieving my goals and helping to improve and advance our future.

In conclusion, I believe I would be an excellent candidate to receive the PEGO Bursary. I am a highly motivated individual with realistic, but challenging aspirations for my future.  I want to make an impact on the world to help save lives and benefit mankind. I have a strong commitment to higher learning, and this bursary would greatly help to assure my main focus is school next year. I would be honoured to be selected for this award.

Dear PEGO member,

As you are aware, PEGO elections took place in the past weeks. Four promising candidates ran for two director positions in the 2012 Elections. The candidates were very competitive and the participation of the voting members was above average.

I am pleased to announce that the two successful candidates for the Director positions are Charles Goulet (MOE) and Sherif Sidky (MTO).

Please join me in congratulating the new directors and wishing them all the best in their new positions.

Sincerely,

Waleed Shawkat, P.Eng.
